Paterson, NJ Question: How was Paterson  founded? Short Answer: Because of The Falls Paterson Falls during the snow.  Paterson has a proud industrial past. Alexander Hamilton founded Paterson in 1791, making the state's third largest city the first planned industrial city in the United States. Hamilton created the Society of Useful Manufacturers or the SUM.  SUM's purpose was for the United States to be less dependent on imports from Great Britain.  Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies of Scottish and French parents, was appalled by how the British were treating the early settlers.
